The Advantage of Taking Private Dance Lessons

Dance lessons are an excellent way to learn to dance. Students may choose to enroll in a group class or sign-up for some private lessons or possibly a combination of
the two.

Choosing to take Private Dance Lessons

The best reason to choose private dance lessons over group classes is that the lessons are structured to meet the specific needs of each student. The instructor has the freedom to move at that dancer's particular learning pace, whether it be at a slower or faster speed than the average student. In addition the student can focus on exactly what they and their teacher feel is most important area to address during that lesson time, rather than following a set curriculum designed for a group of students. While group classes are good for learning patterns, the level of detail and nuances desired by the student may be achieved during a private lesson allowing the dancer to progress and meet their goals faster.

Things to consider before signing up for Private Dance Lessons

When choosing to take private dance lessons a student must take into account the cost since private lessons cost considerably more than group classes. A typical private lesson fee may range anywhere from $50 to $100 per hour, depending on the area of the country and qualifications of the instructor. Many students would agree though that the cost is well worth it. Please keep in mind that while private lessons are billed by the hour, a lesson will actually be about 50 to 55 minutes in length due to scheduling constraints.

Private lessons may be very intense for the student. Due to the number of dancers typically attending a group lesson (10 to 25 to 50 or more), the teacher has little to no time for any individual feedback; however, with a private lesson the teacher is 100% focused on that student. This may be a bit overwhelming at first but the best way to improve rapidly.

Private Dance Lessons – What to expect

An instructor will often start with an evaluation, where the teacher will discuss the student's goals plus personally dance with them to access their needs. If working with a couple learning to dance then the teacher will not only discuss their goals but will also observe them dancing together. For brand new students with no dance experience, the teacher will suggest a game plan for meeting that student's goals and then start with the basics of the dance they have asked to learn.

Since that hour belongs to the private lesson student, they can ask as many questions as they need to, and the teacher will explain things until the student grasps the concept. The student may elect to rely on the instructor's extensive experience in teaching to better guide and advise them on what they should concentrate on in order to meet their goals.

Dancing should be considered a sport that can be learned on a low level with just a few lessons, or one can choose to take it as far as they wish. Therefore if a student chooses to move toward the competition level in the dance arena, private dance lessons might even be considered a necessity.
